Install and manage WordPress plugins

Choose reliable plugins, install and configure them correctly, and check compatibility without disrupting your website.

Contents and related articles

Before you start

  • A specific feature to add and a list of existing plugins.
  • A test copy and backup before activation.

Define the feature you need

A plugin adds functionality to WordPress. Describe the exact requirement before installing one and check whether your theme or an existing plugin already provides it. Two tools changing the same behaviour can create conflicts that are difficult to diagnose.

  • Separate essential functions from optional ones.
  • Check whether advertised features require a paid edition.
  • For a store, confirm compatibility with your WooCommerce version and checkout type.

Review the publisher and maintenance

Find the plugin in the official directory or on its publisher's website. Read documentation, compatibility information and recent support discussions. A large installation count does not guarantee compatibility with your particular website.

  • Avoid unofficial “free” copies of commercial plugins.
  • Review permissions, external services and the data the plugin uses.
  • Keep commercial licence details and access to updates.

Back up and prepare a test

Back up files and the database before a significant change. Try the plugin on a copy before adding it to a live website. For a cloned store, prevent real payments and customer emails before running tests.

  • Record WordPress, theme and active plugin versions.
  • Choose a practical test such as submitting a form or placing a test order.
  • Keep a way to return to the previous configuration.

Install through the dashboard

In Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for the exact name and confirm its publisher. Click Install, then Activate. For commercial software, upload the installation ZIP provided by its publisher; it may differ from the complete download archive.

  • Activate one new plugin at a time so problems remain traceable.
  • Open its settings and follow the official setup wizard when provided.
  • Never enter a key or password supplied by an unverified source.

Check the feature and side effects

Run your test on desktop and mobile. Also check related features: cache changes can affect the cart, while security software can block payment webhooks. Compare the behaviour before and after activation.

  • Test in a private window without an administrator session.
  • If an error appears, deactivate the new plugin on your copy and repeat the test.
  • For conflicts, keep the exact error and follow our diagnostic procedure.

Maintain and remove unused plugins

Schedule updates and verify the outcome. Deactivation and data deletion are different operations, with behaviour determined by the publisher. Read the uninstall instructions before removing software that stores orders or form submissions.

  • Remove unused plugins after preserving necessary data.
  • Do not deactivate an active payment gateway on an open store without an intervention plan.
  • If a feature breaks after an update, record versions and the change date before requesting help.

Official documentation

Labels and options vary with versions, plugins and your account. Refer to publisher documentation for your configuration.
